Just recently we had beautiful spring weather here in Switzerland. On a sunny Sunday afternoon we drove to Rothenthurm in Canton Schwyz to go for a walk in one of the largest moor areas of Switzerland. We parked near the train station in Rothenthurm and headed out from there on a circular route through the moor. Something that struck me in the town of Rothenthurm was it’s remarkable church with writing on the roof i.e. the text was composed using coloured slates! We were on the go for about three hours and enjoyed the flat, moor landscape. The landscape was still pretty bare and lifeless, as spring has not yet shown itself much here at this altitude of over 900 m above sea level. We decided that we’ll have to come back another time, maybe later in the spring or in the early autumn. Although I wouldn’t recommend visiting in the summer, as there is very little shade. Another walking possibility here would be to walk one way from Rothenthurm to Biberbrugg or vice versa and get the train in the other direction, as the Voralpen Express train line runs through the moor. Visiting this area reminded me of previous visits to nearby Sattel, or rather the high plateau above Sattel, accessible via cable car. It’s another great area for walking and geocaching and is home to one of the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridges, the Skywalk.
